Keeping Your Musical Body Healthy
By Corey Palmer
Just like it is important for a basketball player or hockey star to keep themselves in shape for their game, it is just as important for musicians to do the same. Musicians can have just about the same amount of risk to hurt themselves as anyone else. The amount of demand that some instruments take on the physical body can be intense. The main thing to remember is that playing music should be treated just like performing any other physical activity. Not only can muscles get overworked and strained, the mind needs rest as well.
It is also important that during long sessions of musical performance or practicing, that plenty of water breaks are taken. The physical activity done during playing your instrument can cause you to sweat out a lot of water which you need to replenish. This is also especially important if you play your instrument with your mouth, like a brass or woodwind instrument. Keeping your lips moist will definitely help your playing.
The same goes for eating. Make sure you take the time to keep your body fed. I know of people that are so into their music that they sometimes forget to eat!
When you are playing your musical instrument, it is imperative to make sure that you keep your body in the most natural and comfortable position as possible. Contorting your body into unnatural positions to get a certain note or chord change cause cause serious physical damage. Do not try things that you know your body is not ready for. Remember that certain things take a long time and a lot of practice to master. Break things up in manageable pieces and work on them one by one until the whole song is learned.
You also want to make the most use of your practicing time. This means taking the first few minutes and doing a proper warm up routine. This will get your muscles stretched and ready for the music that is going to be practiced on. Trying to jump right into a musical piece that you are not ready to play will not only frustrate you, but could cause you to harm yourself.
The main thing you need to keep in mind when keeping your musician’s body healthy is to use a lot of common sense. Treat it just like any other physical activity and you should be playing for years and years.
