Guys and Dolls is based on the short story “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown” written by Damon Runyon. The story revolves around Nathan Detroit, the organizer of the oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York. When he bets fellow gambler Sky Masterson that he is not able to make the first girl he sees fall in love with him, the next girl he sees proves to be somewhat of a problem. Her name is Sarah Brown and she is a pure-hearted reformer of the Salvation Army type. What ensues is an evening that will have you laughing the whole way through.
Guys and Dolls is a show that has won and incredible number of awards over the years. The musical first appeared on Broadway in 1950, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, book by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling and produced by Feuer & Martin. That same year the musical was made into a movie, and was released the following year on January 16, 1956. Guys and Dolls hit the stage once again in 1965, this time only playing for a short time from April 28 to May 9th. But Jerry Orbach was nominated for Best Featured Actor for his performance as Sky Masterson.
A third revival of Guys and Dolls hit the stage for previews on July 11, 1976, with an official opening on July 21 of that year. This time it played for more than six months, closing on February 13, 1977. That year it received six award nominations and one win, a Theatre World Award given to Ken Page for his performance as Nicely-Nicely Johnson.
