Venice: Carnival, from 14 to 24 February 2009

Filed under: Top 20, bands, music, playlist — Admin @ 1:40 pm

By Michele De Capitani

The origin of Venice carnival, which is particularly heartfelt both by locals and by tourists, dates back centuries: the first document in which the term carnival is explicitly used and connected to the idea of public entertainment was written in 1094, while the first official edict asserting that Carnival was to be considered a public holiday was written in 1296. In that period it was probably necessary for the Serenissima republic to give its citizens, in particular to the lowest classes, the possibility to have fun and to celebrate, and wearing masks was not only synonym with amusement, but it was also a way to destroy all differences and social classes, thanks to the anonymity that people gained through masks. Masks production thus became a real form of art, and the job of mascariere was officially acknowledged in 1436 (and Venice is still well-known for its masks shops). Carnival celebrations, which in the beginning lasted 6 weeks, marked also the following centuries, and the golden period of Venice Carnival arrived in the 18th century, when it became a well-known event also in the surrounding countries. However, towards the end of the century, after Napoleons occupation, carnival celebrations stopped, and they began again only in 1979.

Since then Venice Carnival has become more and more important, it has gained an international appeal and it has become an attraction both for adults and for children. This year celebrations, which will start on February 14th and end on February 24th, will take place in all the citys sestieri, each of those will be connected to one of the five senses: San Polo to sight, Dorsoduro to hearing, Santa Croce to smell, Cannareggio to taste and Castello to touch, while San Marcos area will be linked to the sixth sense, i.e. intellect. All the city will therefore be invaded by masks and cheerful people, and visitors will be offered a programme of events that has never been as rich as this year, and that includes music and dance shows, performances of acrobats and buskers of international renown, as well as workshops for children and food stalls (grab the chance to taste some Venetian delicatessen, like frittelle), but also terrific masked balls and parties organised in fascinating locations. Although we live in 2009, the most ancient carnival traditions will not miss, and some of the most awaited events are the Flight of the Angel (or Flight of the Dove), first held in the 16th century, and the Feast of Mary, the recollection of a historical event that took place in 943, which is characterised by a procession led by flag-wavers, musicians and12 local girls, among whom the most beautiful one is elected.

Venice carnival is a good mix of ancient traditions and modern entertainment, appreciated both by children and by adults; it is characterised by a cheerful atmosphere and by wonderful masks that have no equal in the world. It is for all these reasons that for centuries carnival has been identified with Venice.

During carnival the city is overcrowded with tourists: to be sure to find accommodation book now a cheap hotel in Venice.

Filed under: Top 20, bands, music, playlist — Admin @ 4:35 am

By Roberto Garabell

Everybody is craving to avail free stuffs; even the iPod owners are always looking for free music to download for iPod; however, most sites that offer totally free services are often found illegitimate by the law. It is not advisable to download anything from sites such as these because they are not authorized by the law and you might end up in penalty.

To guide you in your search for a good download source, I have written down a list of things that you should pay close attention to when you are looking for a site to download free music for iPod.

1. A site that showcases a lot of ads and pop-ups most of the time cannot be considered as a good download source. Sites like these are only interested about getting benefits but do not really care about the satisfaction of their customers.

2. Do not get carried away by intensive publicities. There are sites that are trying to appear like they are too good to be true, only for you to find out that they are not like what they are claiming to be. You will be surprised to find out that the download speed is too slow; the quality of the music is terrible and so on. Moreover, you will be more shocked to know that you’ve downloaded a malware as well. What a catch!

3. Do it in a legal way. Downloading iPod music for free but illegally might put you in jail. Therefore, never risk your reputation and your future this way because it’s not a very good idea to listen to your favorite songs behind bars.

There are several sites nowadays that offer free music download for iPod. These sites are proven to be legitimate and you are only required to pay once for the joining fee, afterwards you will be entitled to get all their quality musics including the songs that you always love to hear.

You will hear many things about the legal and illegal sites online. It will be a good idea to search for forums and user reviews about each site that you are targeting to join before downloading free music for your iPod. This will awaken your senses as to which sites can be trusted and which are not.

U2 Tickets - Get On Your Boots

Filed under: Top 20, bands, music, playlist — Admin @ 12:18 pm

By Brent Warnken

I am currently sitting at my desk and listening to the latest release from U2, the single “Get On Your Boots,” which is the first track available from the new album that will be out February 15. Just think, in under a month from now, U2’s highly anticipated new album will be hitting the music charts with a bang. Meanwhile, their latest single “Get on Your Boots” has recently been released as a taste of things to come, and what a taste it is! Lead singer Bono definitely knows how to wow the masses, and his timing is as ever impeccable. Releasing the single right after the Irish rock artists entertained President-Elect Barak Obama with their MLK Day anthem and their unofficial post-9/11 anthem at the Lincoln Memorial. These Dublin natives also provided their classic “Pride (In the Name of Love)” to Obama’s pre-inaugural concert, giving the first black presidency one of the best theme songs for the new government platform.

And, when talking about U2, one can hardly refrain from mentioning the group’s nearly 20 Grammy Awards that they have one over the years. Of those 20, the majority of their wins have taken place since the year 2000, which makes these years their golden years…at least so far. Who knows what future decades will bring from this incredible group? But for now we have “Get On Your Boots” as the first single available from their February 15th release, No Line on the Horizon.

As someone who is a relatively new fan of U2, I was introduced to the group by my husband, who has been an ardent fan ever since he picked up the album Joshua Tree for the first time back in the ’90s. As a young teenager he was an avid fan of the group and has continued listening to them ever since. One of his favorite things about them is that they have managed to create a sound that smoothly ages with the group, without seeming elderly or outdated. As music moves on, so do they, but without becoming elders rocking out on stage to the embarrassment of their addicted fans. The album is also coming out at a fortunate time for me, as I know exactly what to get my husband for his birthday, a U2 album. And if his parents beat me to that then there is always the possibility of U2 tickets the next time U2 is touring the US, which will hopefully be soon.

All-in-all “Get On Your Boots” is a delightful taste of what is coming, leaving me with great anticipation of what the band will be doing next. I am really excited to get home tonight and tell my husband about this latest single as he has not looked at the news yet today. And, in closing, when you do decide to pick up U2 tickets, be sure to check for key seats online as they will definitely be selling out quickly once their latest album hits stores.

The Brits Are Back, Who Do You Want to Win?

Filed under: Top 20, bands, music, playlist — Admin @ 2:41 pm

By Musa Aykac

Every year we see the annual Brit awards hit our screens, the award show started in 1977 and has since grown to become a world leading recognised award in music. The show has been a place full of incidents with famous stars, and every year it does not fail to deliver. Let us just briefly cast our minds back to some of the more famous incidents that occurred.

Who can forget the 1996 show when Michael Jackson was given the “Artist of a Generation” award, Jarvis Cocker got so annoyed by the performance that he run across the stage lifting his clothes up. The most recent occurrence was 2008’s presentation of an award from Vic Reeves and Sharon Osbourne. After Vic Reeves forgot what he was presenting Sharon Osbourne wrestled to get the microphone and then called him drunk in front of millions of viewers.

Those were all in the past though, I am sure that we will have a lot of controversy in the future brits, but let us turn our attention to the 2009 nominees and have a look at who will come out triumphs.

Firstly the best British male solo artist isn’t as strong as it used to be, but still consists of some talented singers, which include Ian Brown, James Morrison, Paul Well and will young. My opinion is that James Morrison will come out victorious.

The Best British Female artist category is a very strong one this year and consists of artists such as Adele, Beth Rowlet, Duffy, Estelle and Mia with three of these artists already picking up grammy’s.

Another strong category in 2009’s Brit Awards is best British single, there have been so many great singles in 2008 that its really hard to choose from and should be a very close call. The nominations are Adele - Chasing Pavements, Alexandra Burke - Hallelujah, Coldplay - Viva La Vida, Dizzee Rascal/Calvin Harris/Chrome - Dance, Wiv Me, Duffy - Mercy, Estelle Ft Kanye West - American Boy, Girls Aloud - The Promise, Leona Lewis - Better in Time, Scouting for Girls - Heartbeat, X Factor Finalists - Hero. With half of these from X Factor it looks set to be a winner for Simon Cowell.

As you can see from the line up the night is set to be a star studded event which will leave viewers wanting more. As for the drama I am sure that we will not be let down any time soon.

For great Family Holidays, UK Family Holidays and Bargain Family Holidays

What Is MIDI And How Does It Work In Electronic Keyboards?

Filed under: Top 20, bands, music, playlist — Admin @ 4:58 pm

By Duane Shinn

How can one or two musicians sound like a full band? The answer is MIDI. It’s the abbreviation for “Musical Instrument Digital Interface.” It’s the electronic “language” that is “spoken” between different instruments and the main device (computer) controlling them.

Put simply, MIDI allows different instruments to communicate with one another and with a central computer. It could be compared to a group of people who all speak different languages trying to communicate. A person who speaks Spanish could issue a command in Spanish to someone who speaks French. An interface would translate that information into a code. The code would be transferred via a cable to the person who speaks French. That code would in turn transmit the original message in French. That same code could be transmitted to another person in any other language. The message will be understood as long as all are on a common interface.

Musical Instrument Digital Interface allows any MIDI-capable instrument to interact with any other MIDI instrument and/or computer. This makes it possible for one central computer or instrument to control every other device connected to it. The devices are connected via MIDI cables. The cables transmit the information from device to device.

MIDI is most commonly associated with electronic keyboards. The reason is that keyboards were among the earliest instruments to be manufactured MIDI-capable. Electronic keyboards tend to be the preferred instrument for creating MIDI files. Keyboards are also among the simplest to use as command centers for a bank of connected instruments.

Today, however, there are numerous instruments that are manufactured with MIDI interfaces. MIDI guitars and drum machines are common. Wind and brass instruments can also be MIDI capable.

Musical Instrument Digital Interface is different from an audio recording. Audio recording is a replication of sound waves. A MIDI file on the other hand is actually a code. No sound waves are recorded. Instead, a file is created which contains coded information. The information can then be transferred from instrument to instrument or computer. The receiving device “reads” the code, and it is interpreted in that device’s “language.”

Let’s use the electronic keyboard as an example. A musician could play a particular song on the keyboard. MIDI turns that music into a binary code. The code contains information on what keys were pressed. It also interprets things like:

* The amount of pressure applied to the keys.

* The intervals between each key pressed.

* Whether the pitch changes while a key is pressed.

This code can then be transferred to other devices. The same song can be then be reproduced. MIDI files can also be created on a regular computer. The files can then be transferred to various instruments.

It’s even possible to control other devices through Musical Instrument Digital Interface. A lighting system is one example of this. An entire bank of stage lights can be controlled by a computer or even an electronic keyboard.

What does this mean for musicians and performers? One person could conceivably give a stage performance utilizing multiple instruments simultaneously. This same lone musician could even be his own light technician. He can do it all and sing too by simply pressing computer or electronic keyboard keys at the right times.

MIDI revolutionized the world of music and performance. The technology continues to have wide-reaching application possibilities. Its quality has greatly improved since it was first invented in the early 1980s. Today Musical Instrument Digital Interface is considered an essential part of many performer’s and band’s equipment.
